SF Barnes

Latest Cricket Stories

Sydney Francis (or SF for short) Barnes only played 27 Tests for England at the start of the 1900's, yet still managed to finish with 189 wickets at an average of under 17. Someone with such a phenomenal record would perhaps be expected to bowl like the wind. Instead the man from Smethwick in Staffordshire was a master of swing and seam, using subtle arts, rather than speed, to bamboozle opponents. What made his efforts even more impressive is that he had to do it all with just one ball throughout an innings - Barnes played well before the rules were changed to allow a new cherry for each team after so many overs had been bowled. He made history when he was chosen to play for his country, becoming the first man to be picked out of the professional leagues rather than plucked from the county circuit. His selection was even more incredible considering it was based on his performances in just one net session. Barnes' mixture of fast leg and off breaks saw him take 106 wickets against Australia, though it was against South Africa that he performed the best. He claimed a career-best 9-103 in the 1913-14 tour that saw him finish with 49 victims, a feat which is yet to be matched during the course of one series. He played his final first-class game at the age of 57, though he continued to turn out in minor counties cricket well into his 60's.
