With an exhausting Ashes series now behind them, England have predictably opted to rest several of their star players for the NatWest Series with Australia.

The five-match one-day international battle will bring an end to this summer's Ashes tour and presents one final chance to secure some bragging rights ahead of the winter return series Down Under.

With captain Alastair Cook and four other established players sitting out, some unheralded names have been given the chance to shine. Here, we take a look at the four players in the squad who have not played an ODI for England before.

Michael Carberry (Hampshire)

Generally regarded as one of the unluckiest players of the current generation, Carberry's only previous international appearance came in a Test match against Bangladesh over three years ago.

The 32-year-old opener has been a solid run-scorer in the County Championship for a number of years but has pressed his claims for England selection by stepping up his game this season, especially in the limited-overs formats.

The powerful but fluent left-hander made his biggest impression in the Friends Life t20, where he averaged over 55 and scored a century, but he also has an average of 47.1 in the Yorkshire Bank 40 so far.

Now settled in at Hampshire following frustrating spells at Kent and Surrey, Carberry will be hoping to show it's not too late for him to stake his claim for a regular England place.

Boyd Rankin (Warwickshire)

Rankin is the latest player to switch allegiance from Ireland to England, following in the footsteps of Ed Joyce and Eoin Morgan.

The 6ft 7in paceman featured in 37 ODIs for Ireland, including at the World Cups of 2007 and 2011, before looking to further his career at Warwickshire.

Injuries have hampered his progress but England have always been keen on the extra pace and bounce he offers and he has been part of the second-string Lions set-up for some time.

He made his debut for his adopted country in the T20 series against New Zealand earlier in the summer.

Chris Jordan (Sussex)

Ravi Bopara (Essex)
Jos Buttler (Somerset)
Michael Carberry (Hampshire)
Steven Finn (Middlesex)
Chris Jordan (Sussex)
Jamie Overton (Somerset)
Kevin Pietersen (Surrey)
Boyd Rankin (Warwickshire)
Joe Root (Yorkshire)
Ben Stokes (Durham)
James Tredwell (Kent)
Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire)
Luke Wright (Sussex)

Jordan's pace bowling promise has finally been delivered on this season and he has been rewarded with his first full England call-up.

The 24-year-old Sussex seamer is the second-leading wicket-taker in the County Championship this season having taken 51 scalps at an average of 26.58, including four separate five-wicket hauls.

He has played only six matches in the Yorkshire Bank 40, taking 11 wickets at 22.18 to complement a superb debut season for his new county after leaving Surrey at the end of last year.

Although he was born in Barbados Jordan, whose career has been blighted by injury problems, was given his cricketing education in England and has British grandparents.

Jamie Overton (Somerset)

The 19-year-old Devonian has been fast-tracked by England after an impressive county season.

Overton - whose twin brother Craig is also on the Somerset staff - is a tall, strapping seam bowler capable of generating serious pace and bounce.

He is already a regular for Somerset in both four-day and one-day cricket and has taken 31 first-class wickets in 2013.

Should he make his debut in the series, Overton would become the first teenager to play for England since the late Ben Hollioake in 1997.
