    Shots stun Cumbrians in cup

Aldershot followed up their Carling Cup shock defeat of West Ham with an impressive 2-0 victory over League One Carlisle.

Michael Rankine's opener just before the break gave Dean Holdsworth's side a surprise second-round lead before Anthony Straker's deflected second-half effort put the result beyond doubt to give the Shots their first home win of the season. In the dying seconds of a heavily-contested first half, Rankine found some space down the right, controlling Luke Guttridge's exquisite chip beautifully before firing across Adam Collin into the bottom-left corner to break the deadlock. The visitors had looked the more likely scorers up to that point with Stephen O'Halloran's headed effort cleared off the line the best of the chances. But the home side took heart from Rankine's opener and looked much the stronger after the break and Straker sealed the win after 75 minutes. The Grenada international, only playing after successfully appealing his red card against Oxford last Saturday, rampaged down the left and his whipped cross clipped Carlisle skipper Danny Livesey on its way in.
