Bayern Munich's campaign got off to a dismal start as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Neuer error gifts Gladbach victory at Allianz Arena

Bayern Munich suffered defeat on the opening weekend of the Bundesliga campaign for the first time since 2001 as they lost 1-0 to Borussia Monchengladbach. Gladbach, who beat Bayern by the same scoreline in the first game 10 years ago, repeated history to spoil Jupp Heynckes' third debut in charge of the Bavarians. It proved to be an even worse bow for Bayern's new number one Manuel Neuer as his glaring error allowed Igor de Camargo to score the only goal of the game in the 62nd minute. Bayern striker Mario Gomez was keeping Marc Andre ter Stegen busy and had the home side's best chances in an even first hour. He headed straight at the Gladbach goalkeeper in the seventh minute before forcing him into a more difficult diving save just after the break. When Ter Stegen was beaten by another Gomez header in the 55th minute, the post came to his rescue. Gladbach's one and only chance of the first half came in the 42nd minute when Juan Arango's effort was tipped wide of the post by Neuer.

    Ahead

The visitors thought they had gone ahead in the 59th minute when De Camargo flicked the ball past the onrushing Neuer, but he had shoved Bastian Schweinsteiger out of the way just prior to his header. However, De Camargo had the ball in the back of the net legitimately three minutes later as Neuer committed an error of judgment in once again racing from his goal. Jerome Boateng left the ball for his goalkeeper, but De Camargo got there first and guided it into the empty net with his head from the edge of the penalty area. Bayern's response was immediate with Arjen Robben testing Ter Stegen, who did well to dive low to his left to deny the Dutchman. Thomas Muller finally found the back of the net in the 77th minute, but his goal was wrongly ruled out for offside as Mario Gomez, who did not make contact with the ball, was beyond the last Gladbach defender and not Muller. Bayern spent the last 10 minutes camped in the Gladbach half, but they were unable to find a way through the massed ranks of white shirts as the Foals held on for a memorable victory at the Allianz Arena.
