With both sides desperately searching to end recent slumps, the game was always destined to be a tight affair.
And so it proved, with neither team able to claim the victory they crave.
Hosts Catania did take the lead an hour into the contest, with Michele Paolucci profiting from some slack defending to fire past a stranded Francesco Benussi.
However, their advantage lasted just eight minutes before Jose Ignacio Castillo levelled matters.
Argentine striker Castillo had been on the field less than 60 seconds when he picked up possession in a seemingly harmless area of the field.
The South American ace had other ideas, though, and strode forward before unleashing an unstoppable drive into the top corner.
A draw keeps Catania in the European hunt, despite their recent setbacks, while Lecce are still firmly embroiled in the relegation dogfight.
