Championship outfit fall at the first hurdle

Charlton are out of the Carling Cup at the first round stage following a 1-0 defeat against Yeovil. Paul Warne scored the only goal of the game to ensure that the League One side wre able to celebrate taking an impressive scalp. The Championship outfit had set about stamping their authority on the game early on and, inspired by on-loan Fulham midfielder Hameur Bouazza, dominated the early proceedings. The Algerian international was the creative catalyst for the Addicks as he fed 16-year-old Jonjo Shelvey who unleashed a fierce drive which forced Glovers keeper Josh Wagenaar into evasive action to tip the ball around the post in the sixth minute. The visitors had Wagenaar to thank for keeping them in the game as he pulled off a string of fine saves in quick succession to deny Algerian international Bouazza and Luke Varney.

And then, in the 27th minute, lowly Yeovil stunned The Valley faithful by snatching the lead against the run of play as talismanic captain Terry Skiverton flicked on for striker Warne to pounce and slash home from the middle of the area. The Addicks' woe was compounded before half-time when defender Jonathan Fortune was forced to limp out of the action. Charlton had their chances to equalise but their aerial efficiency was lacking as Varney, Shelvey and towering defender Kelly Youga all failed to trouble Wagenaar with their headers at the beginning of the second period. Boss Pardew introduced striker Chris Dickson for winger Jerome Thomas in a desperate attempt to inject some life into his flailing side but his now three-pronged attack found a Yeovil defence in stoic mood. Charlton continued to press but could not muster a response to Warne's early strike as boos greeted the final whistle at The Valley.
