Dave Hibbert's 12th goal of the season gave the visitors a first-half lead which they protected despite playing the last half an hour with 10 men after Holden upended Davide Somma.
Shrewsbury goalkeeper David Button kept his side on level terms with two excellent saves from Ian Morris in the first 20 minutes before Craig Disley and Steve Leslie wasted good chances for the visitors.
