Farfan sinks CSKA to keep PSV in the hunt

PSV Eindhoven kept alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League with a 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow. Jefferson Farfan's first half goal proved enough to give the Dutch champions all three points from their trip to the Russian capital. The result means CSKA will finish bottom of the group, while PSV are still in with a chance of reaching the last 16. CSKA dominated the early proceedings, but struggled to make any inroads against a well-organised PSV defence. Dawid Janczyk struck a snapshot wide of the target on 12 minutes and Sergei Ignashevich saw a long-rage effort trickle wide. PSV broke the deadlock very much against the run of play five minutes before the break with a somewhat fortunate goal from Farfan. Dirk Marcellis broke down the right and his cross was deflected up into the air and over his own goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev goalkeeper by CSKA captain Sergei Ignashevich allowing Farfan to head home into the unguarded net. CSKA came out for the second half in determined fashion and Yevgeny Aldonin signalled their intentions with a long-range shot straight down the throat of Heurelho Gomes three minutes after the restart.

      Opportunity

Dudu missed a great chance to draw CSKA level on 57 minutes when he rose highest to meet Yuri Zhirkov's corner only to flick his effort over the crossbar. The home side continued to pour forward and Dudu played in Dawid Janczyk down the left, but his shot was comfortably saved by Gomes. Gomes had a lucky escape ten minutes from time when he came out and missed Zhirkov's corner only for Elvir Rahimic to nod his header over the top. CSKA went close to equalising four minutes from time when Zhirkov fizzed a dangerous cross right across the face of goal, but Aldonin could not get on the end of the cross to convert. Gomes ensured the win for PSV in the dying seconds when he produced a superb diving save to keep out Vasily Berezutsky's header.
