Spireites undone by wonder goal

A stunning goal from Paul Benson saw Dagenham & Redbridge beat Chesterfield 2-1 at Victoria Road.

John Still's side continue good run

A stunning goal from Paul Benson saw Dagenham & Redbridge take all three points with a 2-1 win over Chesterfield at Victoria Road. There were just minutes gone in the second half, when Benson took advantage of Kevin Austin's weak header to fire a stunning volley over Tommy Lee and into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area. The victory ensured that manager John Still avoided the curse that usually comes with winning the manager of the month award. Daggers were full value for their victory, as they had taken the lead after 25 minutes when centre back Will Antwi rose highest to head past Tommy Lee for his first goal for the club. The hosts, who saw Josh Scott hit the post in the opening minute, could have extended their advantage, but Danny Green fired narrowly wide. Chesterfield missed the chance of the half in the closing stages, though, as Jack Lester spun well to find Jamie Lowry, but the wing-back shot off target with just Tony Roberts to beat. Once Benson had netted his wonder goal, Daggers could have added more as Peter Gain forced a flying save from Lee, while Scott Griffiths and Jon Nurse all fired efforts narrowly wide. Chesterfield did finally pull one back after 87 minutes, as Donal McDermott, on loan from Man City, beat Roberts at his near post from 18 yards.
