United break club record as flying start to season continues

Leeds United broke a club record when they made it eight wins out of eight with a 2-0 victory over Stockport. The Whites have a 100 per cent record in all competitions this season and brushed aside County to stay joint top of League One alongside unbeaten Charlton. The home side were on cruise control by half-time thanks to goals from Mike Grella - a replacement for hamstring victim Jermaine Beckford - and central defender Lubo Michalik. And they went on to dominate the contest during the second period, even affording a missed Robert Snodgrass penalty. With Patrick Kisnorbo and Rui Marques on international duty, Leeds were forced into a double change at the back with new signing Leigh Bromby making his debut alongside Michalik. United were in front as early as the ninth minute when American striker Grella showed good skill inside the box before hammering the ball beyond Owain fon Williams in the Stockport goal. Moments later fon Williams made a good save at his near post to deny Snodgrass. The Scot was involved again as United extended their lead. His cross into the box fell obligingly for Michalik who stabbed the ball home from close range. Within moments of the restart, Grella came close to extending Leeds' lead. Great work from Bradley Johnson saw him pick out the American whose measured shot went narrowly over the bar with the Stockport keeper well beaten. Stockport showed few signs of finding a way back but lively striker Nicholas Bignall did force a smart save out of Shane Higgs who had to get down well at his near post to deny the teenager. Leeds squandered a golden chance to kill the game on 61 minutes when they were awarded a penalty for handball by Michael Rose. Snodgrass stepped up to take the spot-kick in place of regular taker Beckford but his weak effort was blocked by the outstretched legs of fon Williams. Grella, who looked lively throughout, had another chance to make the game safe only to be denied at point-blank range by the County keeper. Fon Williams continued to be the busier keeper and had to be alert to deny first Neil Kilkenny and then to tip over the bar under pressure from Luciano Becchio. At the other end Carl Baker let fly from long distance but his effort went high over Higgs' bar as Leeds continued their flying start to the season.
