Rearranged fixture fails to rain goals

Monaco made it back-to-back 0-0 draws to start the season after being held at home by Montpellier in their rearranged Ligue 1 fixture. The game had originally been scheduled for last weekend only to be called off due to heavy rain and Tuesday's encounter failed to produce any goals. Montpellier had the first chance, when Olivier Giroud was released on the left and he passed to Souleymane Camara whose shot went slightly wide. The visitors were then grateful to goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren who kept out Thomas Mangini's free-kick which was heading for the top corner. Monaco were dominating in attack, Daniel Niculae sending a snap-shot inches over before the hosts almost scored through Chu-Young Park whose header came back off the left post. Both sides were full of attacking intent and shortly afterwards Montpellier went close when Hasan Kabze crossed for Giroud who put a header just wide. The second half was much the same, Camara just missing with a header from Estrada's free-kick before Monaco keeper Stephane Ruffier pulled off a superb save after Giroud controlled the ball, turned and fired in a shot. A minute later and Montpellier keeper Jourdren made a fine save as he backtracked and palmed away Park's lob. Guy Lacombe's side had opened their campaign with a scoreless draw against Lyon while Montpellier enjoyed an impressive win against Bordeaux.
