Switzerland striker Marco Streller will miss the World Cup finals after breaking down in training.
The languid FC Basel frontman tore a thigh muscle on Wednesday and has subsequently been ruled out of this summer's showpiece in South Africa.
He was immediately attended to by the Swiss national team doctors, but they later revealed that there was no chance of him recovering in time to make the trip.
Streller can at least console himself in the knowledge that he was part of the Swiss set-up at the 2006 World Cup, so has experienced life on football's biggest stage.
He could also have the opportunity to return to that level again in the future, as at 28 years of age his career has some way to go yet.
Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has drafted in FC Basel forward Albert Bunjaku as a replacement.
Bunjaku, who plays his club football for German outfit Nurnberg, becomes the third player of Kosovo descent in the squad.
