Serie A round-up

Milan suffered a shock home defeat at the hands of Empoli, while there were victories for Fiorentina, Sampdoria and Lazio.

Milan suffer at home to Empoli; Juve go second

Milan suffered a shock home defeat at the hands of Empoli and remain without a home win in Serie A this season. The UEFA Champions League holders had drawn all three of their previous matches at the San Siro and were hot favourites to overcome an Empoli side who had picked up just one point from four away games. But the visitors took the lead through Luca Saudati in the 55th minute, and even the introduction of Kaka from the Milan bench could not alter the outcome and they are now 10 points adrift of leaders and bitter rivals Internazionale. Juventus moved into second spot in the table as Alessandro Del Piero celebrated his new contract with the winner in the 1-0 victory over Genoa. Del Piero grabbed the only goal of the game on 36 minutes when he volleyed home Pavel Nedved's cross. Juve boss Claudio Ranieri ended the game in the stands after being sent off by the referee and Nedved picked up a red card late on after appearing to elbow Abdoullay Konko. Fiorentina climbed to within four points of Inter as they cruised to a 3-0 victory at home to struggling Siena. Giampaolo Pazzini put the home side into the lead after just 15 minutes and former Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu doubled their advantage just after the half-hour mark. And substitute Christian Vieri, who had only come on for fellow goalscorer Pazzini eight minutes earlier, added a third in the 72nd minute.

Bellucci brace

A second-half brace from Claudio Bellucci helped Sampdoria extend their unbeaten home start to the season at the expense of Parma. Vincenzo Montella, who spent part of last season on loan with Fulham, broke the deadlock midway through the first half before Bellucci's double (47 and 59). Lazio survived the second-half dismissal of Fabio Firmani to secure a 1-0 win away to Livorno. Goran Pandev fired the visitors in front in the third minute of added time at the end of the first half and, although Firmani was given his marching orders with 21 minutes remaining for a second bookable offence, Lazio held on.
Torino fight back
Ten-man Torino came back from two goals down to snatch a point away to Atalanta. Andriano Ferreira Pinto put the home side in front in added time at the end of the first half and the visitors were left up against it when defender Cesare Natali received two bookings in two minutes. Cristiano Doni looked to have wrapped up the points for Atalanta from the penalty spot but Nicola Ventola gave Torino hope 15 minutes from time and Marco Motta sealed a remarkable fightback in the 87th minute. Udinese had to come from behind in their 1-1 draw against Palermo with a point leaving both sides in the top half of the table. Carvalho Amauri opened the scoring after 17 minutes but Gyan Asamoha responded after the break to restore parity. Catania remain without a win on their travels in Serie A despite taking the lead away to Cagliari through Christian Terlizzi (10). But the visitors were caught cold at the start of the second half with Alessandro Matri levelling moments after the restart.
