Cagni replaced by Malesani

Empoli have sacked coach Luigi Cagni, with the club in the bottom three in Serie A. Cagni led Empoli into European football last season, but has endured a difficult campaign to date. Sunday's 0-0 draw at home to Torino left Empoli in 18th position in the table after just two wins from 13 league games. Club president Fabrizio Corsi originally put his faith in Cagni, but has now performed a U-turn by dismissing the coach. "I do not understand how one can say that the team doesn't respond to me when against Torino they played a great second half," Cagni told Gazzetta dello Sport. "Now I could say a lot, but I prefer to accept the decision." Alberto Malesani has been quickly appointed as Cagni's replacement by Empoli president Corsi.
