Serie A round-up

Internazionale took a big step towards retaining their Serie A title with a 1-0 win over Torino.

Big wins for Juve and Milan as Inter march on

Internazionale took a big step towards retaining their Serie A title with a 1-0 win over Torino. Juventus cemented their hold on third spot in the table with a comprehensive win over Atalanta. Milan remain on the fringes of the UEFA Champions League places after a victory at home to Reggina, while Sampdoria remain in the hunt after seeing off Udinese. Cagliari eased their relegation fears with a home win against Empoli and Catania took maximum points against Lazio. Elsewhere, there were victories for Parma over Napoli and Genoa away in Siena. Roberto Mancini's Inter side are now six points clear of second-placed Roma, who drew 1-1 at home to lowly Livorno on Saturday. Struggling Torino, under new coach Gianni De Biasi, put Inter under severe pressure but Julio Cruz's diving header from a corner on half an hour was enough for the visitors. Juventus have left it too late to mount a title bid but eased to a 4-0 victory away to Atalanta. Nicola Legrottaglie gave the visitors the lead inside the first minute of a game, before Alessandro Del Piero bagged a hat-trick. The veteran playmaker grabbed his first after six minutes, before making the result safe on 34 minutes. He then rounded of the scoring and claimed the match ball with a third, and his side's fourth, in the 65th minute. Milan piled further misery on rock-bottom Reggina with a comfortable 5-1 win at the San Siro. Brazilian superstar Kaka stole the show as he scored Milan's opening three goals. He got his first after just eight minutes, converted a penalty on 34 minutes, and completed a fine all round display with a third on 68 minutes. Filippo Inzaghi then put the result beyond doubt four minutes later, before Alexandre Pato stepped off the bench to bag a fifth in the closing stages. Edgar Barreto had brought Reggina back into the game with a 40th minute strike, but it eventually proved to be nothing more than a consolation. Sampdoria ensured that they remain level on points with Milan as they claimed a 3-0 win at home to Udinese. Antonio Cassano got the game up and running with a 24th minute opener, before Claudio Bellucci bagged a brace with a 42nd minute strike and a 55th minute penalty. A miserable day for the visitors was completed when Tomas Zapotocny was given his marching orders for two yellow cards just before the hour mark. An action packed encounter at Stadio Ennio Tardini saw Parma go down 2-1 to Napoli, in a game which included four red cards. Igor Budan gave the home side the lead from the spot on 22 minutes, before Maurizio Domizzi levelled things up with another penalty three minutes into the second half. Marciano Bogliacino completed the turnaround for the visitors when he grabbed the winner on 71 minutes. Parma's McDonald Mariga was the first player to be dismissed on the stroke of half-time, before a frantic final 15 minutes descended into farce. Napoli's Walter Gargano and Parma's Giulio Falcone both saw red on 75 minutes, and were followed down the tunnel just four minutes later when the hosts were reduced to eight men following Andrea Gasbarroni's indiscretion. Cagliari are not safe yet but gave their chances a massive boost with a 2-0 success at home to Empoli. Robert Acquafresca opened the scoring on 9 minutes and Michele Fini wrapped up the points with a second on 64 minutes. Another game which saw a flurry of cards was Catania's 1-0 victory over Lazio. Gionatha Spinesi scored the only goal of the game from the spot after 34 minutes, but Luciano Zauri (32) and Ousmane Dabo (58) both saw red for the visitors. Genoa were also reduced to 10-men in their game at Siena, but held on to claim a 1-0 win. Abdoulay Konko got the winner after 24 minutes, before Gaetano De Rosa was dismissed for a professional foul 10 minutes later.
