Mixed emotions

Arsenal Ladies and England star Alex Scott continues her regular Sky Sports column with a combination of good and bad news ahead of World Cup qualifiers

England star Alex Scott has a combination of good and bad news ahead of World Cup qualifiers.

It is always nice to start with the good news. I am pleased to be sitting writing in my team hotel in Bournemouth while I am currently away with the England national team. As I wrote in my previous blog, a lot has changed with the women's national team and Hope Powell is no longer in charge. Brent Hills has stepped in as caretaker manager for the two up-and-coming World Cup qualifiers and the Football Association is due to announce the full-time manager before the team next meet-up in October. So, with Brent in charge, I was glad as always to receive my England call-up. I never take my place for granted in any team and you never know a manager's thoughts on team selection. I really cannot wait for the first game against Belarus on Saturday. So much happened over the summer in Sweden during the disappointing European Championship, so this is a good chance for everyone to prove a point. What people saw in Sweden was not a true reflection of this team. We are a good team with a lot of talented players and the only way to prove that to people is to make sure we put in a great performance on Saturday. We need to let our football do the talking and get a good three points under our belts and get this World Cup qualifying campaign off to a good start. There is a long way to go to 2015 when the World Cup will be played in Canada but we need to make sure we do all we can to make sure this team will be on that plane. After Saturday's game we then play again next Thursday against Turkey at Fratton Park. At the same time, I am starting a degree in sports writing and broadcasting, which I am really looking forward to. I have always been interested in the media side of the game, hence all my blogs and video blogs. A lot of the degree will be based around work placements, so I am excited about the different avenues and learning environments I am going to be in over the next year or so. I need to start looking for internships and start planning because the time does really seem to be flying. That is all my good news done and now for the bad. The time has finally come but Arsenal Ladies will not be winning the Women's Super League (FAWSL) title this season for the first time in 10 years. This does not sit right with me. It burns every time I say this or have to write it. The year of 2013 has not been one to remember for Arsenal Ladies. I am not going to sit here and make excuses and look to point fingers, because I am a firm believer that you should first always look internally and try to fix the problem. The league was in our hands up until last week and the fact of the matter is we drew two home games on the bounce 0-0 against Lincoln Ladies and Bristol Academy and that is what put the nail in the coffin. If we had got the results we needed in those games, the picture may look a little different right now. Yes, we won the FA Cup and we are in another cup final in the FAWSL Continental Cup to played on 4th October but the league is always your bread and butter and the main one you should always look to win. The season has been an exciting one for the fans, however, with people finally happy that the title is going elsewhere. Where the title is going to go will all be decided on the penultimate day of the season, when Liverpool host Bristol. If Bristol win, the title will be theirs. If Liverpool win or draw, the title goes to them. I will end on saying a massive good luck to both these teams, who really both have had fantastic seasons. I am not going to pick out a winner for the game, I am just going to watch the result come in then congratulate whoever that may be. May the best team win.
