Novo and Burke on target in replay at Partick

Rangers stayed on course for the quadruple with a 2-0 victory over Partick Thistle in their Scottish Cup quarter-final replay. Fresh from their midweek Uefa Cup success over Sporting Lisbon, Walter Smith made seven changes for the game at Firhill Stadium. First Division Partick earned a deserved 1-1 draw in the initial tie at Ibrox, but they found themselves on the back foot early on as Rangers started aggressively. Rangers were rewarded in the 26th minute when Nacho Novo broke the deadlock from close range after good work from Chris Burke. Burke then doubled Rangers' advantage six minutes before half-time with a header from Kris Boyd's assist. Boyd had a chance to finish the tie as a contest moments later but he was denied by goalkeeper Jonathan Tuffey, leaving Partick with at least some hope going into the second 45 minutes. Partick were presented with the opportunity they craved just minutes after the restart when Mark Roberts was brought down in the box by David Weir and referee Iain Brines pointed to the penalty spot. However, Simon Donnelly struck his shot wide of Allan McGregor's right-hand post to continue his record of never having scored against Rangers. Rangers felt they should have had a spot-kick of their own for handball but Brines ruled in favour of Partick. Partick kept battling and almost pulled one back when Donnelly rattled the crossbar, but Rangers were able to cling on and book their place against St Johnstone in the last four.
