Macclesfield made an awful start to the season as they were convincingly hammered 4-0 by Shrewsbury at the New Meadow.
The Shrews signalled their League Two intent in an impressive display and could easily have doubled the score line.
Skipper Ben Davies almost opened the scoring early on, but defender Richard Walker raced back to head clear from under the bar after goalkeeper John Brain was stranded outside the area.
Grant Holt's diving header was then brilliantly saved by Brain. But Brain's luck ran out when ex-Tranmere midfielder Shane Cansdell-Sherriff blasted a 35-yard shot which ricocheted off the bar and onto the unsuspecting keeper's back before crossing the line.
Midfielder Davies was then floored by defender Ahmed Deen in the area in the 50th minute and record-signing Holt stepped up to score from the spot.
Fellow new-boy Graham Coughlan, a summer signing from Rotherham, appeared unmarked to head home Kevin McIntyre's corner after 79 minutes and five minutes from time substitute Dave Hibbert rounded off the scoring as he headed home Coughlan's nod across goal.
