McCombe grabs Vale win

Port Vale chalked up their first away win of the season with a 1-0 success against Shrewsbury.

One goal seperates the sides as Vale win away

Port Vale chalked up their first away win of the season and their first in six league games with a 1-0 win at Shrewsbury, thanks to the head of John McCombe. Kris Taylor missed two good chances as Vale dominated the first half, but in the second minute of first-half stoppage-time McCombe headed home from Tommy Fraser's corner. Referee Steve Bratt, who had issued 15 yellow cards in his previous two games, booked Louis Dodds after only 35 seconds and sent off Shrewsbury skipper Graham Coughlan in the 55th minute following a second booking for a hotly-disputed handball which he deemed to be deliberate. Ten-man Town finished strongly in front of the season's largest crowd but never troubled teenage goalkeeper Chris Martin. The game ended in confusion when referee Bratt showed Dean Holden what he thought was a second yellow card in stoppage-time but the Shrews defender was allowed to stay on the pitch when he realised his mistake.
