Swans humbled by Palace

Swansea fell to their second home defeat of the Championship season against Crystal Palace.

Swans miss chance to move into top-six

Swansea missed out on a chance to move into the Championship play-offs as they were sent crashing to their second home defeat of the season by Crystal Palace. Second-half goals from Victor Moses and Jose Fonte gave Palace a 2-0 lead against a Swansea side that had lost only one of their previous 19 league games. Substitute Gorka Pintado pulled a goal back for Roberto Martinez's side but Shefki Kuqi added a third right at the death to secure all three points for the visitors. Swansea boss Martinez made one change to the side that beat Plymouth on Tuesday night, with Mark Gower replacing Thomas Butler in midfield. Neil Warnock made three changes following Palace's capitulation at Burnley, with Nick Carle, Lee Hills and Moses all recalled.

Threatening

The Eagles made a positive start in South Wales, Carle having an early opportunity to mark his return to the side with a goal but the former Bristol City midfielder shot straight at Swans goalkeeper Dorus De Vries from 12 yards out. Palace continued to threaten early on and Moses tried his luck from just outside the penalty area but his right-foot strike flashed wide. Defender Ashley Williams then missed an opportunity to put Swansea in front when he headed a Jordi Gomez corner straight at City keeper Julian Speroni. The home side lost Alan Tate to injury at half-time and his replacement Matthew Collins almost broke the deadlock just a minute into the second half. The midfielder let fly with a vicious drive from 25 yards out but saw his strike rebound off the post. There was further frustration for Martinez's side just a couple of minutes later when Palace took a surprise lead courtesy of Moses. The forward found space inside the penalty area before drilling a clinical left-foot shot past De Vries to silence the home supporters.
Chances
Martinez reacted by replacing Gower with Pintado and Nathan Dyer had an opportunity to level sent his shot wide of the post. Swansea were left with a mountain to climb when Palace doubled their lead on the hour-mark. Carle floated in a free-kick from the right, the ball was kept in by Anthony Stokes, who then swung in an inviting cross for Fonte, who headed home from close range. But Swansea could take heart from the fact that Palace surrendered a two-goal lead at Turf Moor in their previous game and a comeback seemed on the cards when Jason Scotland set up a goal for Pintado after 65 minutes. Pintado should have equalised four minutes later, but blasted over the bar from inside the penalty area. Scotland was denied by the agile Speroni nine minutes from time as Palace continued to be forced onto the back foot. But Kuqi settled the match three minutes into stoppage time with a nice finish after being set up by Clint Hill.
