John Jackson returned to his old club to mastermind Colchester's comfortable 3-1 win over Swindon.
Jackson scored one and made another before Swindon, a club he appeared for on loan back in 2002, staged a late rally which almost earned them a point.
The U's were ahead in the 31st minute when a long ball was nodded down for Jackson to score with a left-footed shot.
He then turned provider in the 44th minute with a pass which defender Jack Smith failed to cut out, allowing Scott Vernon to score from close range.
Simon Cox pulled a goal back with a 68th-minute penalty after Colchester defender Matt Heath handled in the area.
But Colchester re-established their superiority in the last minute when Sunday-Akanni Wasiu broke clear and rounded goalkeeper Peter Brezovan before shooting into an empty net.
