Torquay mark League return with win
Goals from debutant Scott Rendell and Lee Mansell gave Torquay a winning return to the Football League as they beat Chesterfield 2-0.
Rendell took just 15 minutes to notch his first competitive goal for the League Two's newest arrivals - back after two years in the Blue Square Premier.
The on-loan Peterborough man played a cross-field ball to Danny Stevens and then continued his run to finish the move after Stevens had exchanged passes with Nicky Wroe and cut in from the left to slide the ball past Mark Crossley to present Rendell with the simplest of chances.
Rendell also had a hand in Mansell's goal 19 minutes from time, flicking on Wayne Carlisle's cross from the right for the right-back to head home.
Chesterfield countered and it needed a goal-line clearance from Chris Todd to clear substitute Jordan Bowry's effort.
Gulls keeper Scott Bevan had earlier kept out Derek Niven's 20-yard strike, while Drew Talbot fired just wide for the visitors - and Bevan made fine late saves to deny Martin Gritton and Donal McDermott.
