MLB: Max Scherzer claims 16th win for Detroit Tigers

Maz Scherzer claimed his 16th win of the season as Detroit Tigers sealed a 3-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

The right-handed pitcher allowed only three hits as he took a shutout into 7 and 2-3 innings before being pulled, with Jose Veras taking a third out of the eighth and Joaquin Benoit finishing with his 12th successive save.

Scherzer is the first pitcher to win 16 of his first 17 since Roger Clemens in 2001.

Torii Hunter, Jhonny Peralta and Jose Iglesias all struck solo homers for the visitors.

The Tigers have now won 11 of 12 and are top of American League Central, while the White Sox have lost nine straight games and sit bottom of the standings.

Michael Saunders homered twice and drove in five runs and Erasmo Ramirez retired 18 of the first 20 batters as Seattle beat Baltimore 8-4.

Jake Peavy impressed as Boston beat Arizona 5-2.

Peavy allowed just four hits in seven innings, striking out seven and walking two, with Shane Victorino and Jarrod Saltalamacchia among the batters who homered for the Red Sox.

Wil Myers had an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to help Tampa Bay to a 2-1 victory over San Francisco.
