World Superbikes: Eugene Laverty wins second race at Laguna Seca

Aprilia rider Eugene Laverty won the second race in Laguna Seca to move up to second in the World Superbikes championship.

The Northern Irishman powered past Davide Giugliano on his Althea and championship leader Tom Sykes (Kawasaki) in the last four laps to secure victory in California.

Sykes, who won an incident-hit opening race on Saturday, led for most of race two but fell away after being overtaken by Laverty and came home fourth.

But Yorkshireman Sykes still leads the championship standings and sits 23 points clear of Laverty, who advanced into second place in the overall standings, just a point ahead of team-mate Sylvain Guintoli.

"I wasn't sure I could do that as I didn't have great grip but it just shows the power of the Aprilia," said Laverty.

"That was one of the best races of my life and I had to work so hard over the last few laps."
